Using the Internet Safely

Considering the amount of time children spend on the internet, it is reasonable for parents to be concerned with their children’s safety. It is important for parents to educate themselves of internet safety and teach their children what they should and should not share online. As a general rule of thumb, children under the age of 13 should never give out their personal information online without a parent’s permission.

The following websites have information for kids and parents about staying safe online:

  • Kids.gov has an Online Safety website with information about cyber bullying, how to protect your personal information online, and more
  • The FBI’s Kids Safety website has internet safety tips and additional safety tips and rules for kids
  • Common Sense Media’s Privacy and Internet Safety website contains information for parents on parental controls, privacy settings, and more
